Quail in the Classroom

Getting ready for the storm!

Here's something that you can do that pretty simple and it's GREAT for New Jersey's quail.

You can get a pallet or some other simple wooden structure that's about 4-6" high. Put it near an edge of the woods or even in a field -- cover it with branches. Don't bury it, just cover it.

This will give quail and other birds a place to get out of the snow and wind for the storm. You don't need to have this all over the place but a few per acre would be a real safe haven for our feathered friends.

Another great idea, at the edge where the meadow meets the woods -- do some "hinge cuts" of your trees and let the branches hang down to the ground. The object is to give a place for the birds to shelter from the storm without the fear of the snow/branch structure collapsing on them.
